If you’re enjoying the relaxing feel of a holiday in Grenada, you’ll enjoy the even more laid back island of Carriacou. It’s a short flight from Grenada for those in a hurry, but the two-hour Osprey ferry trip from Grenada’s harbour at St George is cheaper and gives you great views of blue seas and green islands.
The ferry landing is in Hillsborough, the main town. Not much traffic here, but a chance to sit out on a seaview balcony and have a drink, some callaloo soup or fried fish. Ade’s Dream guest house is near the pier, quite basic but friendly and reasonably priced and near plenty of cafes and restaurants.
Nearby is a superb sandy beach, very natural with green bushes and palm trees behind.
Carriacou has buses, or you can get a taxi tour round the island. This takes in the Princess Royal Hospital which is high up in the hills and has a wide view over Hillsborough and the reefs and islands
The settlement of Windward is on the tour, famous for a tradition of building wooden sailing boats on the beach.
Carriacou’s reefs, on the sheltered western side of the island, have corals, giant blue barrel sponges and lots of fish life. Great for learning to dive in warm sheltered water, with more challenging deeper dives and drift dives too. Deefer Diving Carriacou is near the beach in Hillsborough with easy access to some beautiful reef sites.
Just a couple of days in Carriacou leaves a lasting impression of this friendly, beautiful island. A week could restore the sanity of the most frazzled overworker!
